I've been under paid myself! I was under paid and thought that having a low price would get me more business; boy was I wrong. So after lots of trial, error and pissing prospects off, I realized that my clients were benefiting from my former lack of knowledge. So much so that I started putting everything I learned in writing; and created the original pricing program back in 2002. Here was the last straw for me. In 2003 I worked with a client for 9 months. During that time she went from working 50 hours a week to 1 day a month. And this client, one of my higher income clients, increased her company sales from $8,000,000. to $14,000,000. Great stuff you'll agree.
So what was my pay for helping her do this? Tick, tock... tick, tock...
A big frig'n $6,000.! Why? Because I was an under-charger. Note the word "WAS", because I no longer under-value all the time and experience I bring to my clients.
What I've learned since then is that when a business owner values the worth they bring to their business, they win every time.
Most often I find that someone's pricing is directly connected to their
- hourly rate as an employee
- thinking that they need to be the "Wal-Mart" of their industry (and yes, I shop there, too.)
- the level of their perceived confidence in their own skills d)it takes a lot of time to master the art of pricing
- there is a lot of misinformation out there about pricing
- the amount of times they're asked for discounts -- instead of the value of the great results their clients receive.
